Pre-Conference Workshops: International Mobile Learning Festival 2017

Create your own engaging and interactive Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs) with the easy to use the tools for Micro Learning Moments: Tools for the rest of us not so technical teachers

This session will demonstrate for you the three steps of creating a SPOC, teaching student to use the tools, and providing students with micro-learning moments. Your students can engage and interact in and out of the classroom with Google educational tools when you create a free SPOC with Google Docs, Forms, Groups, and YouTube Live Streaming. Although your students don’t necessarily like learning how to use these tools to learn, they really like knowing how to use them. Including these tools in your SPOC you create micro learning moments for your students. You will be helping your students take advantage of short periods of time to have quick reviews of course material with their mobile devices.

In-Class Joint Media Engagement: International Mobile Learning Festival 2017

This study investigated students’ using mobile devices in the classroom to follow along looking at the lecture slides, answer questions, and search for data and solutions in JME mode following along with the instructor. This not only enabled students to follow along and answer in-class questions and to take notes on soft copy slides, but also, guided students to learn skills needed for finding data and use higher level thinking to solve problems. Additionally, students reported they would often refer to different resources within the site and and on the internet with their device during the in-class sessions. The instructor followed the idea to get the students started using their devices in class and they had more confidence learning with their device after class. The students reported of having a better understanding of how to find and review information, use site tools to help them write papers, and complete practice exercises within the site. Both qualitative and quantitative feedback will be discussed.
